Song of the Week #140
An audio medley by Carl Sigman
Among many other distinctions, Carl Sigman co-wrote "A Marshmallow World", my Christmas single with Jessica Martin from last year. So we could hardly not mark his centenary this week. We'll be observing the anniversary in our traditional format throughout the week, with a different song each day beginning tomorrow. But to kick things off we're doing something we've never done before: an audio edition of Song of the Week, featuring not just me and Jessica doing "Marshmallow World" but Sinatra, Glenn Miller, Placido Domingo, the Specials, the Andrews Sisters, Frankie Laine, Billie Holiday, Count Basie, the Righteous Brothers, Louis Prima, Cilla Black, Nat "King" Cole, and many others performing Carl Sigman songs, including "Pennyslvania 6-5000", the theme from Love Story, "Civilization (Bongo Bongo Bongo)", "It's All In The Game", "Arrivederci Roma", "Answer Me", "Ebb Tide", and a few curiosities from the more cobwebbed corners of my record collection.
You can get the podcast here - it's great fun, and you'll be singing along within seconds. And don't forget to join us every day for the rest of the week for a Carl Sigman Song of the Day. By the way, Carl's son Michael Sigman has his own centenary tribute to his dad over at the Huffington Post.

Matt Damon's suicide bomb of a movie, The Green Zone, did predictably disastrous business on its opening weekend - even by the standards of anti-Bush, anti-Iraq War pictures. But it does give us an excuse, for the second of our new Friday features, to celebrate Matt's finest hour. Well, okay,... Read more... Steyn on PeopleWednesday, 17 March 2010 Jonah, you'll like this.
By the way, a reader reminds me of what I wrote on the back page of NR six years ago — May 31, 2004 — contemplating Iraq round about now:
I know what I’d like: Iraq, circa 2010, is a functioning confederal state, not a perfect democracy, but... Read more... Steyn’s Song of the WeekMonday, 15 March 2010
Song of the Week #161
by Paul Simon
When you're weary
Feeling small
When tears are in your eyes
I will dry them all...
When you're weary of songs that feel small, it's nice to have a song that feels big - seems to be about something more than just boy-meets-girl, goes on... Read more... Ave atque valeSaturday, 13 March 2010
Had David Ahenakew died eight years ago, he would have been remembered as just another affirmative-action Order of Canada mediocrity garlanded with all the baubles of the state while lining his pockets with the spoils of institutionalized ethnic grievance. Instead, he'll be remembered as the affirmative-action Order of Canada mediocrity who jumped the tracks,... Read more... Steyn on CultureTuesday, 02 March 2010 Whenever I write about “climate change,” a week or two later there’s a flurry of letters whose general line is: la-la-la can’t hear you. Dan Gajewski of Ottawa provided a typical example in our Dec. 28 issue. I’d written about the East Anglia Climatic Research Unit’s efforts to “hide the... Read more... Steyn on BooksTuesday, 02 March 2010 Dominick Dunne died last August and with uncharacteristically bad timing—a day after Ted Kennedy. According to the New York Times, the family wanted to delay announcing his death until the Teddy ululations blew over. But, with the media diving headlong into a vat of mawkish drivel about “The Last Lion”... Read more...
