UP, UP AND AWAY
About the growing global warming scandal— you know, where data are innocently lost, temperature stations innocently misplaced, tree rings innocently unused, etc…

Ever notice the remarkable coincidence that the only errors that ever seem to occur are those which— if uncorrected— would suggest higher, not lower temperatures?

Brian

E) HAVE MAUREEN DOWD WRITE A SNARKY COLUMN ABOUT IT
It will be interesting to see how American media outlets disengage from their climate-change zealotry now that hoaxes are revealed almost daily. I figure the New York Times editorial board, the undisputed kings of climate change media zealotry in the U.S., has a few options:

a) ignore the fraud (possible)
b) admit they have been wrong (not possible)
c) deny that they have been IPCC cheerleaders, ardent pushers of sweeping climate-change legislation, and bashers of skeptics (possible, but probably ridiculous even to themselves)
d) pretend George Monbiot has been secretly hacking into the Times website and writing every climate change editorial they've published

I'm going with "d".

ABOUT THOSE “KNOWLEDGEABLE EXPERTS”…
In one of your recent diatribes about climate change in Macleans, you didn’t mince words in deriding David Suzuki and the IPCC’s Dr. Pachauri. You alleged “hockey stick” fraud, compared “eco-cultists” to jihadists, and threw in Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and hooker visitation rights. Sarcasm may be entertaining, but here it gives a false sense of security to the millions who think they can live a guilt-free, planet-destroying existence.

It is nothing short of perilous to promote skepticism about manmade global warming when the science is irrefutable. Highly educated and knowledgeable experts in climatology and other sciences agree almost unanimously about this. A handful of PhD scientists— and however many journalists and economists disagreeing with various aspects of global warming— is a red herring.

Let’s put it another way. Let’s say that there is a 50% chance that humans are not causing global warming. Would you get on an airplane, if there were a 50% chance of it crashing? Our only hope is to move quickly to entirely emissions-free energy. It took a long time for many to believe the earth is not flat (and even today some dispute evolution). Global warming is only too real.

MARK SAYS: Examine your second paragraph. It is "nothing short of perilous to promote skepticism... when the science is irrefutable". Is English your first language? A true scientist, as opposed to a brainwashed cultist, is always "skeptical", and science, unlike faith, is always refutable - by definition. If you insist that your scientific theory cannot be questioned, then you're in some other business entirely.

More to the point, as a public relations strategy, it's been a disaster. It makes you guys sound nuts. Here's the thing: If the general theory is as "irrefutable" as you say, how come your side has to tell so many lies? About the lack of warming since 1997, about glacier melt in the Himalayas, about temperature readings in China, and on and on. At this rate, "red herrings" are the world's least endangered species..

Saddest of all is how boringly squaresville you sound. In this scenario, you're the flat-earther, while everyone else is moving on.

NEXT TIME, PRESS RELEASES
You were in London, Mark? How come we cockneys never get advanced warning? You wrote:

"A few weeks ago, I was in the Ivy in London late one night having a drink with a producer pal when a very famous actress came in."

Hey dude, I'm at the Ivy all the time and would love to embarrass myself in front of all my friends by paying public tribute to you. Please do let me know when you are next in town!

MARK SAYS: "I'm at the Ivy all the time and would love to embarrass myself." Ah, in the good old days, I used to get offers like that all the time...

Thank you for your kind (and unkind) letters from America, Canada, Britain, Australia and around the world. Mark reads all mail, but especially enjoys the vicious ones. Each day Monday to Friday we pick six of the best for our Daily Delivery. So drop a line to Mark's Mailbox, and on Friday if you're chosen to be the one and only Letter of the Week you'll join our roll of winners from four Continents and receive a copy of Mark Steyn From Head To Toe. It would help if you could indicate your city or town, or, at any rate, your state, province or country. If not, at least let us know what planet you're on.
