MARK'S AUDIO ARCHIVE Print E-mail
Monday, 24 May 2010

Once in a while, in lieu of our usual Song of the Week format, or for our On The Town series, Mark hosts a special audio presentation, a few of which we archive here:

1) A CARL SIGMAN CENTENARY CELEBRATION
In September 2009, SteynOnline observed the centennial of Carl Sigman, who, among many other distinctions, co-wrote "A Marshmallow World", Mark's Christmas single with Jessica Martin. In a special Sigman celebration, Mark plays not only "Marshmallow World" but also Sinatra, Glenn Miller, Placido Domingo, the Specials, the Andrews Sisters, Frankie Laine, Billie Holiday, Count Basie, the Righteous Brothers, Louis Prima, Cilla Black, Nat "King" Cole, and many others performing "Pennyslvania 6-5000", the theme from Love Story, "Civilization (Bongo Bongo Bongo)", "It's All In The Game", "Arrivederci Roma", "Answer Me", "Ebb Tide", and a few curiosities from the more cobwebbed corners of the Steyn record collection.

2) JOHNNY MERCER MONTH
In November 2009, Mark presented a month of celebrations to mark the one hundredth birthday of Johnny Mercer. In part one of this centennial podcast, Mark introduces the Mercer catalogue with "Moon River", "Jeepers Creepers", "Too Marvelous For Words", "Ac-Cen-Tchu-Ate The Positive", "That Old Black Magic" and many more sung by the likes of Billie Holiday, Fred Astaire, k d lang, Louis Armstrong, Rita Hayworth, the Mills Brothers, Rosemary Clooney, Clint Eastwood - and, of course, Mercer himself.

3) JOHNNY MERCER: ONE FOR THE ROAD
To round out SteynOnline's Mercer Month, Mark mopped up a few loose ends, including
"Fools Rush In", "Summer Wind", "I Remember You", "Skylark", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "Day In, Day Out", plus the ornithological Johnny Mercer, the seasonal Johnny Mercer, and some great saloon songs - sung by Bing Crosby, Peggy Lee, Bobby Darin, Eydie Gorme, Willie Nelson, Nancy LaMott, Frank Ifield, Bow Wow Wow plus lots of Sinatra and lots of Mercer, too. You'll be singing along within seconds.

4) ARTIE SHAW: BEGINNING THE BEGUINE ...AND ENDING IT
In May 2010, SteynOnline marked the centenary of a legendary clarinettist, bandleader and (as he described himself) "ex-husband of love goddesses", among them Lana Turner and Ava Gardner. This two-part podcast includes Mark's interviews with Artie Shaw from the SteynOnline archive, plus a cavalcade of big band classics, including "Begin The Beguine", "Summertime", "Moonglow", "Stardust", "Frenesi", "These Foolish Things", "Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered", and many more.

FRIENDLY PERSUASION

Tuesday, 31 August 2010

HAPPY WARRIOR from National Review “I think it is kids’ preference to pair up and have that one best friend. As adults – teachers and counselors – we try to encourage them not to do that.” Thus, Christine Laycob, “director of counseling” at Mary Institute and St Louis Country Day School in...

THE CRIMINALIZATION OF BUSINESS

Monday, 30 August 2010

A year or so back, in the lobby of Fox News, I was approached by a gentleman who introduced himself as a member of Conrad Black’s legal team. That doesn’t narrow it down very much. There’ve been so many of them over the years: Canadian, American, young, old, rough and...

INDEPENDENCE DAY

Thursday, 01 July 2010

Following last week's movie for Dominion Day in Canada, I thought we ought to have something for Independence Day in America. We're not the most inspired chaps around here, so how about, from 14 Glorious Fourths ago, Roland Emmerich's Independence Day? In 1996, Independence Day opened in the midst of...
