Our winter's Tale for Our Time, and the seventy-ninth of our Steyn Club audio adventures, is my serialisation of The Quest of the Sacred Slipper, Sax Rohmer's caper of murderous Mohammedans out and about on the streets of London.
In tonight's episode, the forces of the Prophet manage to get the better of Scotland Yard's finest:
"Someone has been at the lock!" I cried. "But that is impossible, with two men in the room—unless—"
"They were both knocked on the head!"
"Both! But by whom! My God..! And who attacked them?"
"They had no idea. Neither of them saw a thing!"
My amazement grew by leaps and bounds. "But, Bristol, one of them must have seen the other succumb!"
"Both did! Their statements tally exactly!"
"I quite fail to follow you."
A century on, it's easier for the Yard as they're now on the same side as the Mohammedans. Thank you for all your kind comments about this latest yarn. Jan, a Texas Steyn Clubber, says:
I'm all in for this new tale. Yellow Eyes sent shivers up my spine. Love the first person narration. Great choice.
Thanks, Jan. Glad you're shivering.
