I understand the Iran war is pretty important but to me this is the real battle, and I believe it's a battle that the US has already lost.

While President Trump continues to vacillate regarding the U.S. goals for this war, it seems obvious that one of the main reasons for this action was regime change. Otherwise, why take out the Ayatollah and so many other high ranking government officials?
If I'm correct and regime change is one of the goals, then I'm puzzled as to why the administration hadn't prepared an opposition group to be able to take control. I was neither in favor nor against this war, but if this was something the president felt was necessary, he should have had a more comprehensive plan at the ready.
Please take good care of yourself.

I am re-reading America Alone since your reprisal audio version and I've read on ahead to this passage:
"Yet what we're confronted with in Iran are know knows: a state that's developing nuclear weapons, a state that's made repeated threats to use such weapons against a neighboring state, a state with a long track record of terrorist sponsorship, a state whose actions align with its rhetoric very precisely. What's not to know?
So the question is: will they do it?
And the minute you have to ask the question you know the answer."
So what would you say today to the guy who wrote those words twenty sodding-years ago?
It sounds like you may be in favor of the action, just not confident in the ability to get the desired results? Is that a fair take?
P.S. if you are taking requests for the next Tales for our Times, I would love to hear your rendering of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Mark, I would like to know your thoughts on US-Canada relations. I have known for over twenty years now that there is a significant percentage on the Canadian population that does not like Americans. However, they feel far greater liberty to express their dislike of their neighbors because of Trump's trolling. Perceptions have also changed south of the border. The majority of Americans either had a positive view of Canadians or did not really think about them at all. Now there is a great deal of negative feelings towards Canadians because of all the online vitriol and videos of Canadian crowds booing the US national anthem.
When will this relationship be repaired or will it never be the same again?

It manages nicely with about 18% of its citizens being Muslim. Yet you seem hesitant about offering Israel as even a partial model for your main themes. Am I missing something?

Hello Mark,
We will know more after President Trump's address this evening. However, it appears that the USA may simply declare a military victory in Iran and depart. Then, give responsibly to the Europeans and the Gulf States to keep the Strait of Hormuz open.
Absent a popular uprising with Iran, was there really any other practical end? Deploying ground troops was probably never in the cards.
As for NATO, its original purpose to defend against mass invasion of Russia appears obsolete. With the growing Islamic street in many NATO nations, NATO action in response to threats from Islamic states may be politically impossible.
Time will tell whether the war in Iran has changed the Middle East or maybe more likely just temporarily smashed a military threat at great cost.

So onto my respectful disagreement with you and what I've learned to do whenever Trump seems to be steering awfully close the edge.
"Let Him Cook" -- it's my zen reflection on all things Trump. He has proven himself in the heat of all sorts of unprecedented battles, invariably coming down on the right and RIGHT side of every issue since he rolled down that golden escalator in 2015.
He knows better than anyone the stakes of this Iranian incursion: from Gulf States, Fairy-Lindsey and Jared/Ivanka's investors begging for more of the military "excursion" to bring lasting stability to the Middle East to JD, Tucker, et al clamoring for isolationism and a singular focus on what happens within our own borders ... Trump understands the stakeholders, and he is acutely aware of who's two points up in Iowa heading into a pivotal midterm election season that could terminate his domestic agenda.
The guy knows how to balance political dynamics and stakeholder interests like nobody I've ever seen. His rhetoric and tactics may not be artful, but most of the time his eventual deals are stunningly historic. He constantly upends the accepted order of the governing and intellectual elites, who've driven Western Civilization to the brink.
Time to sit back and let the man deal. He's got the most leverage of any man on Earth with a history of deal making unknown to any politician and few businessmen.
Keep the faith, brother Steyn! And warm wishes for your ongoing recovery.

It occurs to me that the odds the Supreme Court will agree with the Trump administration's position on birthright citizenship is quite low. Regardless, we should keep in mind that illegal aliens don't swarm the U.S. so their anchor babies can vote or serve on a jury in 18 years. They do it for the boatloads of cash, free health care, education, rent subsidies and effective immunity from deportation that Congress bestows on the parents.
The good news, such as it is, is that Congress can repeal all these goodies and end the illegal immigration magnet tomorrow if it wanted. The bad news is that convincing the GOP Congress to enact any law that discourages illegal immigration would make amending the Constitution to get rid of birthright citizenship look easy by comparison.

Deal or no deal, we're leaving (Iran). We've "bombed them into the stone ages" so it doesn't matter whether they want to make a deal. They won't have a nuclear weapon. It will take them 15 or 20 years to rebuild, says, President Trump.
Last year's attacks supposedly wiped out their nuclear program. This year something in an intelligence assessment changed, necessitating emptying our limited magazines of smart weapons into even more Iranian targets.
What is the over/under betting line on when the intelligence assessment will change again? Count me skeptical that it will be 15 or 20 years. Those Persians are cagey, and as I believe you've pointed out, they have nuclear neighbors who may be willing to make a deal from Islamabad (aptly sounding name for a city of that ideological bent, don't you think?).
If the reason we had to attack was that we can't let crazy people have nuclear weapons, and if we leave the fight with crazy people — very crafty, crazy people — still in charge, how long will it be until the crazy people eventually do get their hands on nuclear weapons to satiate their never-ending desire for revenge? The problem isn't the nuclear weapons, it's the crazy people, who are multiplying exponentially.
Meanwhile, as you are wont to remind us, and as I agree, the most important fight within our own borders rages on unabated by sufficient efforts of our government to see and avoid the future catastrophe.
God speed, Mark.
