We are happy to share that Mark is doing much better. We will continue to update the SteynOnline community as we receive news. But in the meantime, we wanted to share some of the memories and comments shared with us based on this week's columns:
In the 1960's, my Dad worked for an electronics design firm creating antennas for space flight. I'd hang around reading the next "Aviation Week and Space Technology" which covered all things both civilian and military. Each one was thick and packed with all sorts of technology. Since then, the magazine has thinned. – Robert Bridges, The (New But) Lost Frontier
Mark can take the most, simple of stories and open up its universe of meanings and histories like no one else. I always love the little bits of "you are there" as well when Mark says "Jule Steyn, who... told me years ago..." I saw "South Pacific" as a 13-year-old at the famous summer revival at Lincoln Center in 1967 with Florence Henderson and Giorgio Tozzi himself. Rodgers supervised the production (like I knew who that was). I was in a seat somewhere on the Jersey side of the Hudson, but it is a clarifying image for me that brought home all the showtunes et al that my mom loved and instilled in me and my sister throughout childhood. I considered myself one of the luckiest people on the planet (never envisioning anyone from our Queens family would ever see a Broadway play). And the last, perhaps greatest thing, with this old review by Mark is that I cannot wait to refer to my upcoming retirement posture as being "rallentando." – Chris M., Some Enchanted Evening
My humble suggestion for a good children's book is Richard Halliburton's "The Complete Book of Marvels". I read it when I was about 12 and it is still on the bookshelf. – Impartial Observer, A Change in Schedule
Funny how things just happen. I'm listening to Marks audio tonight with the TV volume low. Was watching the first season of Band of Brothers. While Mark plays The Battle Hymn of the Republic, the soldiers in BoB are singing the same melody, with slightly different lyrics."Glory, glory what a hell of a way to die". Love coincidences. – Nick Bradley, The Swallows Skim, and All is Hushed
Tal, Welcome back to SteynOnline! Will you be joining us this October for our remake of The Odyssey, starring Mark Steyn as Odysseus, aboard the Queen Mary 2? It's bound to be a more interesting voyage than whatever Christopher Nolan is serving up. Please bring your lyre or that other stringed instrument you play. – Glen Flint, A Odyssey to Ignore?
This week, we've welcomed Tal Bachman back to SteynOnline, and featured some Mark classics from years gone by. Full roundup below!
