STEYN I-TOLD-YOU-SO-MOMENT
BRITANNIA: THE DEPRAVED CITY
After America is the only book out there to get it right on both the downgrade and London's civic collapse. The above headline is the title of Mark's chapter on the sad decline of Britain, and everything that's playing out on the streets of London right now is anticipated in Chapter Five of his book. The Pundette picks just a couple of choice morsels:
In Britain, everything is policed except crime. (p. 202)
For Americans, the quickest way to understand modern Britain is to look at what LBJ's Great Society did to the black family and imagine it applied to the general population. (p. 204)
Mark himself muses on one of the more whimsical moments from London's meltdown over at National Review. But, if you ordered After America early, nothing happening in that once great city this week would surprise you.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: In The Boston Herald, Michael Graham calls After America Mark's "excellent new book"; George Savage at Ricochet reckons it's "a surprisingly enjoyable way to snuggle up to the near inevitable global calamity"; and some leftie in St Louis hails Mark's "new lie-ridden book".
